Groups work that is too big for one pass but delivers one coherent, visible outcome — then breaks it into stories that can ship individually.

When to reach for it

When a requirement is too large to estimate in one piece, or when several stories only make sense together.

⚠ Not a folder

An epic is a bet on an outcome — “after this, users can do X”. If the grouping has no shared outcome, you have a heading, not an epic. And if the requirement fits in one pass, it is a story, and an epic on top of it is ceremony.
